CHALLENGE
To create a golf experience without clubs, balls, holes, and courses...
When Mastercard earmarked its airport activation spaces for a golf sponsorship experience, it came with a number of unexpected caveats. To comply with airport safety, we would not be able to utilize physical clubs or balls, and we were limited to a ~10’x15’ space.
On top of that, beyond the thematic elements, Mastercard’s goal was clearly stated: we want to be innovative in the market.
SOLUTION
we delivered a one-of-a-kind mixed reality putting experience...
To accomplish this, we worked with experiential agency Groove Jones to create a mixed reality putting simulator that contained fully interactive courses themed around worldwide destinations.
Our travelers would choose from a number of city options, put on the VR headset, and watch dozens of obstacles pop into view, mapped to the exact dimensions of the space.
From there, they’d play through a course, interacting with everything from an aqueduct shortcut in Rome, to a dolphin ball-return in Miami, creating a seamless experience in a seemingly-impossible space.
RESULTS
that launched for thousands of players at locations around the world.
The experience activated in JFK airport in New York, DFW airport in Dallas, at the British Open in Northern Ireland, and at an innovation showcase hosted by Mastercard.
Card sign-ups tripled as compared to previous year activations of similar length. The footprint drew constant crowds who stood by and cheered, and ultimately had a total lifetime player base in the thousands.
